Choosing the right mattress can be tough, but it’s a decision that you need to get right.  Due to the cost, the purchase of a mattress is a significant investment. If you’ve ever had to sleep on a mattress that is less than comfortable, you know how big an impact it can have on the quality of your sleep. Let’s take a look at the differences between the four basic types of mattresses – innerspring, latex foam, pillow top and memory foam – so the next time you need to buy a mattress, you’ll know exactly how to choose the perfect mattress.

* Innerspring Mattresses

Innerspring mattresses contain coil springs, which provide support for the reclining body. There are a wide range of innerspring mattresses available to buy, and their prices vary widely. Costlier innerspring mattresses usually contain more springs than cheaper ones, but does that necessarily mean they are better? Salesmen will claim that a larger number of springs offer greater comfort, but in fact coil counts above 400 all offer an excellent level of comfort.

Innerspring mattresses vary widely in the amount of support they offer. When buying an innerspring mattress, look for an indication of whether the mattress is firm or soft. Firm mattresses offer more support for the back, therefore helping to alleviate and prevent back pain. They also make it easier for people with limited mobility to get out of bed as they do not dip down as much when the individual lies on them.

* Pillow Top Mattresses

Pillow top mattresses are sprung mattresses that have an extra layer of pillow on top of the springs. They offer extra padding compared to innerspring mattresses. Although they feel soft, the firm layer of padding underneath the pillow top offers vital back support. Pillow top mattresses are perfect for people who prefer a softer mattress.

* Latex Foam Mattresses

Mattresses made from natural or synthetic latex are firm and springy. One of the biggest advantages of latex mattresses is that they provide uniform support without the individual being able to feel individual springs. (This can be a problem in cheaper innerspring mattresses.) Latex foam mattresses offer more support than memory foam mattresses, which means they are great for people with back pain, but less suitable for people who prefer a softer mattress.

* Memory Foam Mattresses

Memory foam mattresses consist of layers of foam of different densities. They are designed to mold themselves to the shape of the body.  They offer the ideal compromise between support and comfort. Memory foam mattresses are often recommended for bedridden people or those who suffer from muscle pain because they spread pressure more evenly over the body than other types of mattresses.

Memory foam mattresses are often favored by couples because they absorb motion, so that the nighttime movements of one partner are less likely to wake the other. Some people, however, find that they overheat when using memory foam mattresses as they do not dissipate body heat well.

Choosing The Right Mattress For You

Ultimately, the type of mattress you choose is a matter of personal choice. Go to a store and try out a few different types of mattresses and figure whether you prefer a soft mattress or one that offers more support. Some stores even offer you the chance to try mattresses out overnight.
