How to Prepare For Overnight Guests

As the holidays draw upon us, many people are getting ready to house overnight guests. Anytime someone comes and stays in our house, we like to be prepared in advance. Below are some tips to get your home ready and how to prepare for overnight guests.

Prepare a Room

Even if you do not have a guest room, it is essential that you give your overnight guests some semblance of privacy while they are staying at your home. For this reason, they need a private room. If you do not have anywhere they can stay, you may have to give up your own room. Although this is not always easy, if you want your guests to feel welcome and comfortable, it is a must.

Launder the Bed Linens

Even if the bed linens you plan to use have been in storage and were not being used, it is still a good idea to wash them. This will make them smell nice, and your guests will greatly appreciate the gesture. Just think how you would feel if you had to sleep on dirty sheets in someone else’s home.  This is why it is important to provide clean sheets for your overnight guests.

Provide extra Toiletries

This category covers anything your guests might need while they are staying in your home. Extra pillows, blankets, towels and washcloths are often needed by your guests. Just in case, keep handy extra toothpaste, toilet paper, cotton balls and q-tips. Place them in a basket where they can be easily seen, or take the time to show your guests where everything is located so they can help themselves should the need arise. It is also a good idea to have on hand an extra hair dryer and some new toothbrushes should your guests neglect to pack these important items.

Provide Food

If your guests are due to arrive around a meal time, prepare them a meal. You need to check with your guests ahead of time for any food allergies they may have. Also, be sure to buy some of their favorite food items for the duration of their stay. This makes them feel at home and welcome. It is a good idea to provide at least one meal per day while your guests are in your home. You do not have to provide every single meal, but providing at least one will help your guests when it comes to their traveling expenses.

Hosting overnight guests can be challenging and expensive. However, it also has its advantages. It offers you the opportunity to make a difference in someone’s life by opening up your home to them, and that shows generosity and kindness that words alone could not. For that reason alone, it is well worth doing.
