Dap Caulk Sparrows Point FacilityThis story starts with six giant tubes of caulk:  http://www.buildingmoxie.com/2011/07/dap-usa-baltimore/, and with a view from the street:  http://www.buildingmoxie.com/2011/07/bmoxies-1st-ever-photo-week-day-5-photo-week-in-review-google-street-style/.  But it was a passing comment (in that second post) “. . . No! I’m not stalking DAP but I would *love* a tour . . .” that got us the invitations.  Barry and I will be touring DAP Products‘ HQ and plant soon; we are finalizing those details now.  And . . .

Until then, I am proud to announce that Building Moxie is a participating partner in DAP’s Seal Your Home Blogger Challenge.  “Huh? What? What’s that?”  Well nutshelling  . . . @DapProducts has provided me with a $100 gift card and I will be using it to purchase $100 worth of DAP Products.  The challenge  – prepare my home for winter.  In other words, I will be weatherizing.

Well . . . since you asked . . . weatherization is the process of protecting a home from external and seasonal elements.  These include temperature changes, wind, precipitation and sunlight.  The benefits of weatherization include reduced energy consumption, substantial savings on electricity bills (some say up to 40%) as well as protection for critical parts of the home, such as pipes . . . from corrosion and freezing.

Formstone to Brick Project Baltimore In ProgressAnd fortunately for DAP . . . I mean — for you . . . Wait! I mean – for me and for those of you that know, I have multiple exterior projects going right now.   First, I am working on the siding on my own house (Yes, still . . . and at the bottom).  And second, we are currently punching out a formstone to brick project.  (Some of you may have seen some of these pics?  No?)  Anyway . . . I had fun posts planned for these projects in the coming weeks.  Both happen to offer great opportunities to seal at and around the trim and/or other penetrations commonly found on a home’s exterior.

Pretty slam dunk weatherization projects I’d say, and simply just good building practice. And while I am on it, other weatherization projects may also include:

  1. Sealing Around Interior Window & Door Frames
  2. Sealing Around Interior & Exterior Pipes & Vents
  3. Sealing Around Electrical Outlets & Switches, Cable & Phone Boxes on Exterior Walls
  4. Sealing Along Foundation Lines
  5. Sealing Where Walls Meet Floors & Ceilings

I am going to record my experience with these types of projects and working with these products over the next couple of weeks.  But it doesn’t stop there, this challenge rolls up into an internet-wide contest called . . . Seal Your Home and Win! It officially opened August 15th (Twitter hashtag: #DAPSealandWin).  Essentially you have the opportunity to share a DAP energy-saving story for a chance to win free energy bills for a year.  Yep! Zero energy bills for a year, you read that . . . and you can see the full deets on how to enter at the bottom of this post.

Fine Print and . . . Nooooo Subliminal Messaging

I have put the suggested disclaimer at the bottom of this post.  I will note that I am being compensated for my participation in this challenge.  (But of course, you know, I will still shoot you honestly.)   However, and for those that track us closely, you may have figured — this money is being routed to Building Moxie‘s 106 Mile Fund . . . and it does get us closer to our goal of attending the 2011 Remodeling Show in Chicago (A Purely Subliminal Aside: Help! We are running out of time…and I may be packing Barry in my suitcase. Please Give. Please Sponsor. Thank You! Our email is blog@buildingmoxie.com. I would love it if we both could go.  I don’t make you sift thru gobs of advertising links to get to the good stuff, we still get respectable traffic, and have some pretty fun folks hanging out . . . . Please! Thanks and Thanks. Sponsor!).  DAP is now an official sponsor and I have added them to the sidebar over there >>.  Continuing, they have also offered us a $100 Visa gift card for you, our readers . . . as a giveaway (which I may still do), but for now — this money is earmarked for those that have and/or do contribute to getting us (both Barry and I) to the Show as well as for those that attend a not-yet-finalized tweetup scheduled for the week of the Show.  (Drawing details soon and *ahheemmm* the PayPal Donate button is over there  >> . . . :End Digression.)
