Hi Col! Thanks for the comment. Yeah, the Smart Strips are great. If you'd like, I could give you a couple of tips on how to best set them up. We can talk about it next week, if you want. Have a wonder Easter and a great weekend!

Great suggestions - I like the smart strip and considering the amount of computer equipment and other electronics in this house I need to invest in a few. The garden, alas, any edible things I plant seem to sustain the local bunnies, deer and racoons.... oh and Harley :) Hope you had a great Earth day!

PS. In the section on kitchen/kitchen garden, I spoke of rain water collection, but neglected to mention the benefits of composting kitchen scraps (non-animal-fat scraps only, of course) as yet another component of a sustainable kitchen/kitchen garden system. This point is actually made, however, in the discussion thread I pointed to, and in Sean's article and follow-on comments.

Hi Nick! Glad you found this article of sufficient value to pass along to others! Can't think of a more welcomed endorsement than hearing that. Thanks again, and Happy Earth Day to you, too!

Thanks very much for that link, Alexandra. You might not have been aware of this, but we had a lively debate a while back on Leah Thayer's Daily 5 Remodel in a posting called <a href="http://www.daily5remodel.com/index.php?action=article&rowid=508" rel="nofollow">"Rest in Peace Already"</a> about kitchen garbage disposals. It all started with a comment I made about kitchen grease and waste going into the municipal sewage system as being a bad idea. Subsequently, Sean Lintow of SLSConstruction wrote a lengthy posting on his blog giving the history of the kitchen trash compactor and his own reasons for wanting to see this appliance finally disposed of (pun intended). <a href="http://blog.sls-construction.com/2011/rip-garbage-disposal-unit" rel="nofollow">Here's the link</a>. Give it a read, if you get a chance -- It's a great article! By the way, did you know that the kitchen trash compactor was, in part, invented by a Poole? :-)
