Let me be honest, I obsess (usually afterwards) about almost everything that I write, and post. Yes, I am still in that phase. But . . . this post — and how, and/or if, it fits — has really troubled me.

I do revel in the opportunity to write from the hip; I find that it is often a great way to explore. But sometimes though — like in life, walkabouts lead only to places that you know.

The building of a house is a series of steps within steps, endlessly broken down into sub procedures and decisions. And these separate parts, such as the building shell, the insulation envelope, the HVAC, the surface finish, the orientation, etc. are all interrelated and in the best examples, fully integrated and cohesive. The systems, each complex in their own right, form a system of systems. This does not happen accidentally or as the result of reading a book. Is it me or are the words “quality” and “custom” the most overworked words in the home improvement industry? Not sure if it was before we laughed about my first experience with demoing plaster, or after he had told me he worked for a bit in set construction on stage crews.
But he said it. “You know the saying . . .” he paused, “You give ten carpenters a hammer. . . .”
And that was it, or at least what I remember him actually saying. And to be honest, I did not know the saying. [ . . . ]

jb, I read your introspective post on Paul Anater's "Kitchen and Residential Design" blog (an excellent blog to follow)and enjoyed it thoroughly. Kudos to you for explaining, in detail, the arduous process that budding entrepreneurs go through in developing an articulate message. The ironic part is that it looks effortless upon completion.
If this stuff was easy, well, everyone would be doing it.

first my apologies to Paul for initially spelling his last name incorrectly. All the same, Paul still rocks and it is fixed now.
Mike — you said it. I hear it often (when talking about going into business for yourself), "why doesn't everyone do it?" Because, you know, it is really, really hard!
